Pt. Birju Maharaj enjoys the status of living legend in the field of Dance, Kathak dance.
He has earned all from the exceptional command over the techniques, skills and practice of Kathak, Lucknow Gharana. Kathak is said originated from the story tellers who started expressing the mood and emotions using music dancing gestures and then dancing on variety of songs. Later on, Nawab Wazid Ali Shah of Lucknow who loved to portray himself as Krishna and beautiful women as Gopies. He employed number of musicians, singers and beautiful women to sing, dance on his demand, keeping hin in the center. After Wazid Ali Shah the employed dancers spread and slowly developed independently as gurus and then Gharanas and led a legacy of Dance among which the Lucknow Gharana is known for its delicacy and expressiveness.
Now a days Kathak enjoys a status of Classical Dance form of India which explores the mudras, movements and instructions of emoting emotions and characteristics of a poetry, written in the Natyashastra, the book on performing arts.
Pt. Birju Maharaj lives in Delhi and inspires generations with his perfection, performance and the delicacy of movement and also with his singing. He is adorable to all. Listening his experience about dance, which he see in all matter and materials around him and can represent its emotions and character through his body and movement.
He has written and composed a number of Kathak poems, tukdas, tihais and choreographed many dance numbers in films and for stage.
